We make rock lullabies.

This has been a busy couple of weeks for New Age Dad—not counting ice cream-obsessed and teething children, ultrasounds (incoming band member has a penis and scrotum!) and new family dogs.

First, one of us wrote a piece on making music with our kids for the New York Times‘ parenting blog, Motherlode. It was generally well-received, though one of the mothers who commented seemed to think the idea of dads keeping up with their hobbies was unrealistic. To her discredit, she seems to have ignored the point of the article: we make music with our children, not to get away from them. Somehow, we still find time to paint our nails.

yeah….goodluck with time for hobbies after baby…I havent mastered that skill as of yet and my ‘baby’ is almost 4. She gets into everyhting and the time she is aslpee I try to do the much needed tasks without her ‘helping hands’ like waxing painting my toe nails…you knwo the things that would fit into ‘me time’ well I dont want to waste precious ‘me time’ after her bed time at night to shave and spackle I want to use it to read or browse the web buy on line watch criminal minds… a hobby …? yes so far my hobby is to find time to do the things that need doing…like a husband…and oh the dog needs a walk every once in a while. ARE YOU KIDDING ME with the hobby article!? ARGHHH!

We also launched a campaign to get our song “The Weekend” picked up by a major ad agency for use in a car commercial—call it a bid to turn our hobby into an enterprise.

Both dads in the band have worked extensively in print and web media, but are perhaps a tad naïve about how agency wheels turn. Bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, we launched an aggressive twitter campaign, tweeting a spec script that complements the song to Alex Bogusky of Crispin Porter + Bogusky. Local stalwart, The Denver Egotist gave us a kindly nod and our campaign got some serious traction due to their posting which was picked up by some other sites like brandflakesforbreakfast.com, industry.bnet.com, adrants.com and mediabistro.com.

We are hopeful that something comes of this. As we’ve noted in other posts, the music industry is no place to make a living and we’ve got mortgages. Wish us luck (or if Bogusky is reading this: reach out, man).
